Multidimensional.Me's Blog Activism - Go get 'em, Koan!

Koan of Multidimensional.Me is fed up with Technorati's unreliable and idiosyncratic temperament, and she's taking it to her blog!

"As I stated at BlogHer, during the opening debate, I have a strong suspicion that technorati_sucks - see this post, this post and this post (and the comments to those posts) for the background to this suspicion."
Yeah, baby! Go get 'em.

Koan goes on to state:

"Explain to me, Niall (or anyone from Technorati) how my blog can show a Technorati Rank: 51,481 (156 links from 37 sites) *today*, when it showed a rank of somewhere in the low 40,000s from 44 sites yesterday? How can that number of linking sites ranking go *down*, from one day to the next, when actually at least one new site linked to mine today? Sheesh... You'll have to take my word about yesterday's ranking, but I've captured a screen grab for today (posted to the ever-reliable Flickr)... [photo] and will readily capture such a screen grab every day until an explanation for the arbitrary nature of results which are returned by Technorati from one day to the next is explained."
I plan on watching this unfold at Multidimensional.Me, and I'm sure I won't be the only one. Will Niall or anyone from Tehnorati respond?

Update 08/16/05: Mobile Jones has a very good post about her experiences with "Technorotty" with some screen captures as examples, and a recommendation for Blogpulse - go take a look!

Are you seeing problems with indexing on your blog?
We are picking up your posts and tags fine at the moment.

Hi Epeus - Thanks for stopping by. I don't know if you'll be back to read my response, but here it is for other readers:

Yes, I was experiencing a great time delay in my tagged posts being picked up by Technoratti. Posts by Halley's Comment using the tag system got picked up right away; I've only had one picked up (see below). Does the tag system work based on "popularity" (defined by links) of blogs?

For instance, these latest posts aren't listed under the tag blogher06, yet Halley's Comment and Susan Getgood's tags are. But my own posts, this one, this one, and this one haven't appeared yet under the tag "blogher06". Yet this one has appeared. Why?

Unlike Mobile Jones and Koan, I have not been documenting things with screen shots, notation, etc.. I've just been manually pinging Technorati like crazy (one for each new post). On the upside, speaking for myself, this criticism is because I like Technoratti and I want it to be the best it can be. (That's your pep talk for the day.)

Thanks again for leaving a comment.

Technorati has been flaky in its indexing pretty much since the get-go, in my observation. I too have gotten their "we're captuing you just fine" posts when I blogged about my issues with their service.

But capturing the data is only half the problem.

I suspect that they are probably taking in more raw data than their indexing architecture can accurately process, and thus one's number of links and ranking can fluctuate wildly depending on what section of their index has been parsed at any given time.

That's just a gut feeling and could be totally wrong, of course. At any rate, I don't even bother with Technorati tags on my blog. I have a trackback ping set up and that's about it. Google is a much better traffic generator for me.

Fiat Lux - Hi!

"I too have gotten their 'we're captuing you just fine' posts when I blogged about my issues with their service."

Oh, I see... :( Containment of criticism of Technorati, but no action? Hm. Well if Epeus (Kevin Marks) would care to pop in and pipe up about my earlier post, that would go a long way toward establishing integrity.

Thanks for your post and comments, Fiat Lux. I may look into Haloscan's trackback add-on for Blogger.
