Technorati Giveth… and Technorati Taketh Away

Elevator, going down!
Recently I noticed—
That's far too aloof. Let me start again.
I'm pushed out of shape because I discovered that Technorati links attached to your blog are removed after "180 days", according to their Support FAQ:
"Why is my link count is only increasing a little, or is decreasing? Why, you…! *fist-shaking*
Technorati calculates link count by looking at all links from the past 6 months. That means your rank will change daily based upon your blog's activity from 180 days ago up to today. As older links fall off your count and new links are added, your link count may increase, decrease, or stay the same."
Oh how the weight of this falls on my ego. I had no idea this was how Technorati operated, or if I previously knew, I had blocked it from my mind.
Second realization: the links I accrued from hosting The Carnival of Feminists last November are just about due to drop off now. Get ready for the long slide right back down the link ladder.
Technorati giveth… and Technorati taketh away.
They knew this day would come, those folks at Technorati; they knew I'd develop this dependency on them for validation.
Yesterday, I was convinced that Technorati was an excellent system, oh, such a beautiful and elegant system. A delight to use and running like a well-oiled machine.
Today I think it's broken, oh so broken. It's the most vile, corrupt system, and the whole thing is fixed anyways, and it's a scam (I'll throw that one in too), to get people to keep blogging furiously to stay on top - or near the top - of the link pile. It's rotten to the core - only self-preening types consult it - and it's divisive to the blogging community, and I detest that putrid shade of green they use on their pages, and, and…
I'm going to do fifty laps now.

Hosting a good carnival is great and terrible that way, yes. Carnival of Bad History brought me some months of extraordinary rankings; I'm back to my normal levels now, more or less.
Lol!!! I guess I'll give up on trying to figure it out. :)
This was just the lift I needed tonight - thanks!
Well heck, I'm down in the 91,000s somewhere.
I care much more about the number of Bloglines subscribers I have than my Technorati ranking. I know those people actually read my blog, whereas I almost never see clickthroughs from Tachnorati.
Actually having written this post and now re-reading it 24 hours later, it strikes me as too earnest and not as heavily self-mocking as I thought it was.
In other words, it looks like I'm whining about my links when I wanted it to look like I was making fun of my own link vanity. Oh well. I'm still working on that tongue-in-cheek thing.
Fiat Lux, I agree with you about subscribers - it's nice to know someone is reading you over the long haul, rather than just popping in.
