"Diversity is Boring"

A few links to diversity issues being discussed online.

That Clinton Picture

Some bloggers recently lunched with President Bill Clinton in Harlem. The photograph of this gathering has prompted criticism about who was invited and who was excluded. See Pam Spaulding's "A-Z list blogging—what is it really about?", which has links to other blogs discussing this issue, including Republic of T., Culture Kitchen, and The News Blog.

A nod to Rox Populi, who, in light of this discussion, republished her thoughts from 2004. Quite interesting, pop over to read it.

"Diversity is Boring"

Science + Professor + Woman = Me has a disheartening tale of being asked to contribute to writing a university document. See "And Now I Am Told That Diversity Is Boring".

Digital Citizen Indaba on Blogging

Over at Black Looks, a post titled, "On Being Tiresome" alerted me to criticisms of the Digital Citizen Indaba on Blogging. This conference is "the first African citizen media and blogging conference", and took place in Grahamstown, South Africa on September 14-16.

The conference welcomed:

"all African citizens, bloggers, mobloggers, vloggers, podcasters, hacktivists, and new media journalists"
But, as Sokari at Black Looks points out—quoting African Bullets & Honey—the speaker list appeared to have few black speakers on it.

By the way, indaba is a Zulu word, and means "a council or meeting of indigenous peoples of southern Africa to discuss an important matter". Would one of those important matters be the racial mix of speakers?
