New CDs to review

Blogger's desk with new cds.I bought some CDs online and they arrived the other day, so I plan on writing a few reviews here.

The CDs shown in the photo are: Fiction Plane, Everything will never be ok, The Who, Who's Next, The Kinks, Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround (Part One), Tom Waits, Rain Dogs, and The Who, A Quick One.

Fiction Plane is completely new to me; somehow Lola and Rain Dogs were missing from my collection and I decided it's time they were added.

I'm familiar with some tracks off of Who's Next and A Quick One, but had never heard the CDs in their entirety. These two purchases were a direct result of my seeing The Who: The Kids Are Alright and Rolling Stones: Rock and Roll Circus.

The Who's performance in Rock and Roll Circus is absolutely stunning. It was recorded in London in 1968, but never released, because apparently The Rolling Stones weren't happy with their performance and thought The Who outshone them. I only know this because the KQED hosts discussed this during the break.

The Who's magnetic performance does undermine The Rolling Stones, but any band would've been overshadowed by The Who. Besides, you get to see a very good performance of "Sympathy for the Devil" so no complaints there. You also get to see John Lennon goofy as all get-out dancing in the audience, and the final closing singalong that starts with Mick Jagger and ends in a group chorus is fantastic.

Anyways Happy Fourth of July and hopefully I'll get some reviews up.

I'm not a good judge on this (the Who Vs Stones) as I thought the Stones set was fabulous ... as an excuse for their (supposedly) poor performance I can cite the fact that the Stones looked very verry tired and Brian (this was his last performance with the Stones) looked out of it completely for much of the time. That said the Who really rocked at the Circus and John Lennon looked very impish.
