Quote o' the Month: The Glorious Point

Paul Taylor, from The Glorious Point, comments on "Breaking News: 'George Bush doesn't care about black people' (at Crooks and Liars):

"Some posters in the blogosphere and newsgroupland have said that this was inappropriate on West's part. However, I think it behooves anyone with an important message that ordinarily would not be heard to take advantage of any opportunity to get the public's ear.

Many had made the same points West made, but mostly in the rarified, academic atmosphere of blogs. This was on national television. No one else was making this important point, and no one can tell me West wasn't speaking for many, many people.

To tell the truth, I had no idea who this black guy was, standing next to Mike Myers, speaking truth to power. It sounded unscripted. Then it went TOTALLY unscripted.

People will pile on West for being inappropriate, but I think it is nothing less than admirable that he was willing to bet his reputation on a truly ballsy stunt. When would it have been appropriate? Where? A year from now, in a web post that hundreds might read, when no one cares anymore, or remembers? Or now, on tv, before millions, live and unedited?" (emphasis by Sour Duck)
